Healthcare
Public vs private care, the clinics expats trust and health-insurance options for residents.
Mauritius runs a dual system: free public healthcare for all, alongside a strong private sector that most expatriates use for day-to-day care. Standards in the leading private clinics are high, and many doctors trained in the UK, France or South Africa.
Public vs private
Public hospitals and clinics are free at the point of use, including for residents, but come with queues and older facilities. They are a genuine safety net, particularly for emergencies.
Private clinics — such as the larger groups in the north and centre — offer short waits, modern equipment, English- and French-speaking staff and comfortable facilities. Costs are a fraction of UK, US or Western European private care.
Health insurance
While private care is affordable by Western standards, serious treatment or evacuation can be costly, so most residents carry private health insurance:
- Local plans from Mauritian insurers — good value for routine and mid-level care.
- International plans — pricier but portable, with higher limits and evacuation cover; favoured by those splitting time across countries.
Confirm whether a plan covers pre-existing conditions and medical evacuation before committing.
Practical notes
- Pharmacies are plentiful and well stocked; bring a supply and prescriptions for any specialist medication.
- For complex or specialist procedures, some residents combine local care with trips abroad — factor this into insurance choice.
